The Great Gatsby Janis Plotnieks Exam – Essay B Americans have had good and not so good times, not only in the way of economics, but all together. Social standards, quality of life, happiness. That is why I think the quote : “You want to hold on to your dream even more when times are hard,” would be the best to represent the novel The Great Gatsby. This quote really reminds me my “old sport” Jay Gatsby. He was going for his dream, not only when times were hard, but even when it was almost impossible to accomplish them. Gatsby had almost everything that a man could possibly want, but he had one more dream left, and her name was Daisy. It may seem so regular that people who have everything are trying to get more, but that was not the case. To get close to his dream, he had to reach that level, that all the ordinary people are calling the dream these days – wealthiness, big house, cars, money. “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 78). That is one of the quotes that shows the best how he loved that likely unreachable girl, his dream girl and what would he be ready to do, to just get closer to her. One of the main parts in American dream is “hard work”, but nobody never mentions the time. Time is also one of the main aspects to reach the dream, because hard work takes time and even after that, it is possible to need more time to see the results of the hard work. For Jay Gatsby it took almost 15 years to find his dream again and even then it took even more to get closer and closer to it. “And if you want to hold on it, then you better define it differently.”(Seelye 1) – as he finally reached his dream, followed the hardest part from the quote – “hold on to it.” But it is not so easy , especially if the dream is a girl and even more, with a husband. But Gatsby knew that she loves him, so he used all his trumps to not to loose her again and make her hold on to him. And this shows connection to first, ,main quote again, because times were getting harder and harder, and Jay needed a lot of self confidence to go for it. But as we all know, everything turned out much more complicated than it was…
